amateur maremma sheepdog kennel, is happy to welcome you within its innovative internet portal.
This site is entirely dedicated to the noble Race of the White Abruzzo Guardians and the review of the social-cultural contest that has allowed the evolution and preservation of the race throughout the centuries.
This portal’s aim is to become the point of reference for all the Maremma Abruzzo Sheepdog lovers in Italy and worldwide.
The project
" Pastore Transumante Web Portal "
provides a progressive and constant incorporation of text- foto- and multimedia contents, results of researches, cognitive analysis and case studies necessary for the understanding of the character traits and the essence of the Maremma-Abruzzo Sheepdog.
These ancient dogs that had always been used by our shepherds to defend their herds, have been a subject of a selection targeted at guaranteeing certain essential somatic characteristics, such as:
- big dimensions and strength, in order to offer protection from prey animals or cattle-raiding outlaws either on their own or in a pack.
- Sobriety, frugality and rusticity to face the hard life subject to continuous wanderings, poor nourishment and bad weather conditions
- Dense and semi-long fur with thick undercoat that offers perfect thermal insulation as well a san eaves-effect in case of extended exposure to rain
- White fur helpful to camouflage within the herd in case of predatory attacks during the night hours, as well as easy enough to be recognized and not to be shot by the shepherd in a fight with wolves or other animals,
Other psychic character traits of high intrinsic value were rendered necessary:
- attachment to the herd
- innate protection instinct
- equilibrium and self-decision capacity
These necessities have shaped throughout years, generations and centuries of shepherding life the noble Maremma-Abruzzo sheepdog as we’ve come to know him today: an equilibrated and reliable, dignified and proud, majestic and resistant, a fascinating dog that we are envied for by half of the world; the other half probably just don’t know what it’s missing.

Let’s start with the section dedicated to those considered the origins of the PMA and the characteristics of the White Guardian, summed up and presented within the Race Standard
Then the identification elements of the PMA-character will be examined. In fact, the particular behaviour of the PMA is the result of the interaction between his intrinsic character traits and the environment he is exposed to.
We than proceed to examine his vivid intelligence, the legendary bravery, the widely demonstrated loyalty, as well as the outstanding vigilance capacities that the PMA can be praised for, together with his innate, but controlled, aggressiveness aimed at protection of the herd or of the property.

The file of each of our dogs is equipped with professional informative and photographic material, including the schematic pedigree, information on HD-exemption (Dysplasia of the hip) as well as on their exhibition and reproduction careers.
Moreover, pictures of the ancestors have been retrieved and made available where possible.
